The story, of which the full title is "Die verlicheiten vnd einsteils der schichten des loblichen streytparen vnd hochberümbten helds vnd ritters herr Tewrdannckhs" ("The adventures and part of the stories of the praiseworthy, valiant and most famous hero and knight, lord Teuerdank") was written around 1514. It was written by or at the request of Maximilian I of Habsburg, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The story is an allusion to the Emperor himself and his search for his future bride: Mary of Burgundy. The best artists of his time were called upon for the illumination of the book, including Hans Burgkmair and Wolf Traut. In addition, a new font was designed by Vinzenz Rockner that would be very influential. This edition, printed on parchment in 1517, was the first edition of the book and intended for the highest nobility of the Empire. The woodcut was designed by Hans Leonhard Schäufelein (recognizable by the monogram on the far right of the image) and carved by Jost de Negker (the other monogram to the left of the other).
